On Monday, Jan. 22, families received letters regarding whether or not their student is recommended for testing for tuberculosis (TB). If you do not receive a letter, please call Everett MS at 415-241-6344.

If your student has been recommended for testing, and you wish to have your student tested at school by the SF Department of Public Health, consent forms are due no later than Monday, Jan 29. Additional TB testing clinics at Everett are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 29, and, if needed, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you prefer to go to your child's health care provider, please indicate that on the consent form and complete the health questionnaire. Please return both forms so we can follow up with you and your child's provider if needed. Forms will be collected in first period or you can drop forms off in the Main Office.

There have recently been unconfirmed reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may conduct a major sweep in San Francisco. Please remember immigration officials are not allowed access to students or student information on school grounds without authorization from SFUSD’s Legal Office.

If you need immigration support, you may speak with a trusted adult at school. Your information will be kept confidential. Find legal help related to immigration from San Francisco Immigrant Support. If you encounter ICE officials in your home or community, or if you or someone you know is detained in San Francisco, you can call the Rapid Response hotline at 415-200-1548.

It has come to our attention that a person associated with Everett Middle School has recently been identified as having active tuberculosis (TB). A person with active TB disease can spread TB germs through the air to those who frequently share the same air. Everett Middle School is working closely with the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) to identify students and staff who may have been significantly exposed to this case of active TB.

There is no evidence at this time that any students or staff have become infected.

To accommodate your questions about TB, Everett Middle School has scheduled optional TB informational parent meetings, where representatives from DPH will be available to answer your questions:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 17, 5-6 p.m. at Everett Middle School, 3rd floor library

  • Tuesday, Jan. 23, 4-5 p.m. at Everett Middle School, room TBD

Further updates and dates for on-site screenings will be posted here.

SFUSD continues to monitor the air quality index for the City and County of San Francisco for the week of Oct. 16. Principals are getting regular updates regarding precautions they should take, including bringing activities indoors when the air quality is orange or red and monitoring students with asthma and other health conditions. As the forecast changes during the school day or at any time during this week, an update will be provided to principals right away. Check the current the air quality index at airnow.gov.

San Francisco has very poor air quality due to the fires in the North Bay. SFUSD has advised all school sites to keep students indoors on Oct. 12 during recess, physical education and lunch. All outdoor sports and learning activities should also be moved indoors.

These guidelines are to remain in place until the San Francisco Department of Public Health deems the air quality has improved and it is safe for children to do activities outdoors. We will continue to update principals regarding any changes.

Beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11, the air quality in San Francisco is expected to become "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (known as a code orange). At that time, schools have been advised to minimize outdoor exertion for students and staff with asthma or other health issues. Alternative activities and settings will be made available for all students at all of our schools.

To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on September 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) over two and half years. USCIS will continue to accept and process RENEWAL applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Below are resources in support of DACA students who are eligible for renewal:

Dear SFUSD Families:

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scale from $50-$500/month based on income.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SFUSD encourages students to be in school every day and we are committed to keeping them safe and fostering learning. We recognize that there are times when students and their families may choose to participate in activities such as demonstrations or strikes outside of school during the regular school day. While we respect and support our students' rights to express their views, please note that participation in a demonstration, walkout or strike will not be counted as an excused absence.

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.

Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

Co-sponsors: the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University, TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers), the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and the Square and Circle Club.
