The Everett Middle School English Language Development (ELD) Department consists of CLAD credentialed English Language Arts teachers who collaborate regularly to provide English as a second language instruction to our English Language Learner (ELL) students. Students at the Beginner and Early Intermediate levels of English receive a double block of ELD every morning. Classrooms are mixed by grade according to language proficiency, enabling teachers to target language instruction and students to progress at their own language level. We regularly collaborate and look at student data to accelerate students through the five proficiency levels of ELD and redesignate them as quickly as possible.
Our core belief is that proficiency in academic English is crucial to college, career and social success and we aim to accelerate our students' English acquisition in a fun, joyful and rigorous way. Our teachers use a hybrid of the High Point, Access: Newcomers and Rosetta Stone programs to provide a balanced approach to Systematic ELD. We recently selected Read180 as the final intervention program for our more advanced ELL students before exiting from the Newcomer Program and moving them into the Biliteracy Program or immersing them completely in general education English instruction.
